How Minor Ailment Prescribing Works in BC
Under British Columbia’s expanded pharmacy scope of practice, eligible BC residents with a valid Personal Health Number (PHN) can consult directly with a pharmacist for non-emergency conditions. Following an in-person assessment, your pharmacist can:
- Prescribe medication: Write prescriptions for prescription-strength treatments, topical creams, or antibiotics when appropriate.
- Recommend OTC options: Suggest targeted over-the-counter medications and self-care strategies.
- Refer to primary care: Refer you to a family physician, walk-in clinic, or urgent care if your condition requires diagnostic testing or further medical evaluation.
- Update your doctor: Notify your family physician (if specified) to keep your medical records up to date.
